A Call for Accountability: Addressing the Silence on Insecurity in Apa-Agatu, Benue State
The Nigerian House of Representatives reconvened this week after its recess, yet it is disheartening to observe Honourable Ojotu Ojema’s apparent lack of concern for highlighting the gruesome murder of a constituent and the ransacking of Ojantele Akpete ward by marauding Fulani herdsmen. If he shows little regard for informing his colleagues about the evils faced by his constituents, who will bring these matters before the committee of lawmakers?
While Honourable Ojema hesitates to address the pressing security concerns affecting his constituency for reasons best known to him, Honourable Blessing Onyeche Onuh, who represents the good people of Otukpo/Ohimini federal constituency of Benue, has demonstrated remarkable courage and dedication. By taking the floor in the National Assembly, she bravely highlighted the security challenges plaguing Benue State and the numerous villages across her local government and constituency that are affected. Her motion for urgent national attention underscores her commitment to bringing this critical issue to the forefront.
It is essential to recognize that tackling insecurity is a collective responsibility that requires national effort. Honourable Ojema’s role should be to advocate, raise awareness, and push for meaningful action until the government takes notice and implements effective solutions. Thankfully, a woman leader, the voice of the voiceless, a leader that takes advise of her people has stepped up to fulfill this role.
Since Honourable Blessing Onuh has taken the initiative to address these pressing issues that Honourable Ojema should be championing, what is now stopping him from bringing up the tragic and brutal murder of late Ernest Owoicho, a father of two, at the hands of personnel from the Nigerian Army? Owoicho’s alleged summons by the army on April 4th under the pretense of questioning, followed by reports of torture leading to his death, must not go unaddressed.
As constituents, we must consistently remind Honourable Ojema of the critical need to act decisively and raise this grave issue as a matter of public National interest since the House of Representatives has resumed. It is time for our leader to step forward and champion the rights and safety of his constituents.
I still remain Comrade Paul G Edoh Jr.
Your sincere constituent
