*BEYOND ZONING: Supporting Competence and Equity in Apa/Agatu 2027*
Politics should be about competence, equity, and the ability to deliver good governance—not just zoning. While zoning has been a long-standing practice in our democracy, it should not be the only deciding factor in electing representatives. The people deserve the best candidate, regardless of their local government of origin.
Currently, the Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency is represented by an Agatu son. As 2027 approaches, there is a growing debate on where the next representative should come from. Interestingly, while many in Apa are urging the current Agatu representative to continue, some Agatu indigenes believe it is time for Apa to take the seat. This highlights a significant shift in political thinking—one that prioritizes fairness and performance over rigid zoning arrangements.
I stand firmly in support of *OJEMA* 2027, not because of zoning but because leadership should be based on merit and the ability to bring development to the constituency. If an Agatu candidate proves capable of providing quality representation, why should they be denied the chance simply because of an unwritten zoning agreement? We must ask ourselves: do we want progress or just political correctness?
The focus should be on electing a representative who understands the needs of both Agatu and Apa, someone who can unify and uplift the constituency. The people deserve a leader chosen on the basis of vision, capability, and commitment, not just geographical rotation.
As we move towards 2027, let us prioritize competence over sentiment and elect the best candidate for the job—one who will truly serve the interests of Apa and Agatu.
