THE SHAMEFUL CONDUCT OF SENATOR ONYEKACHI NWEBONYI

March 26th, 2025

The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) vehemently condemns the disgraceful, uncivilized, and misogynistic behavior of Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, who has once again demonstrated his deep-seated contempt for women through his reckless utterances and actions.

It is beyond shameful that a man who occupies a seat in the hallowed chambers of the Senate—a position meant to be a beacon of legislative excellence—continues to demean, insult, and publicly degrade women with impunity. His latest attack on Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, a globally respected leader, economic expert, and advocate for good governance, is not just an insult to her but a slap in the face of every Nigerian woman and the values of democracy.

This is not an isolated incident. Senator Nwebonyi has a well-documented history of assaulting and dehumanizing women. As Commissioner for Capital Territory in Ebonyi State, he mercilessly harassed and humiliated poor women, especially widows, destroying their means of livelihood without remorse. As PDP Chairman, he oversaw a looting spree under the guise of party leadership, betraying the trust of those he claimed to serve. Now, as a senator, he has continued his pattern of crude, violent outbursts, this time targeting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, two formidable women standing against injustice.

His latest outburst, where he referred to Dr. Ezekwesili as “an insult to womanhood” and “a hooligan,” is not just unbecoming of a senator but is symptomatic of a larger problem—his unfitness for leadership. How can a man who lacks basic respect for women represent a constituency where women are the majority? How can a man who treats female colleagues and national figures with such disdain be trusted to legislate fairly for all Nigerians?

Senator Nwebonyi is nothing more than a political opportunist desperately seeking validation from Senate President Godswill Akpabio. His sycophantic display in the Natasha-Akpabio case is nothing but a shameful attempt to prove his loyalty, even at the cost of his own dignity. He has shown time and again that he does not serve his people—he serves only himself and his political benefactors.

The people of Ebonyi North did not elect a thug to represent them. The fact that discussions are already underway to recall him from the Senate is a testament to the growing outrage against his conduct. We, the Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN), stand firmly with the people of Ebonyi North and call for immediate action:

A Public Apology: Senator Nwebonyi must publicly apologize to Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and all Nigerian women for his disgraceful conduct.

A Recall Process: The people of Ebonyi North must take decisive steps to recall this disgraceful senator from the National Assembly. He does not deserve to speak on behalf of honorable Nigerians.

A Legislative Sanction: The Senate must take disciplinary action against Nwebonyi to send a strong message that such behavior has no place in Nigeria’s democracy.

A Broader Fight Against Misogyny: The culture of impunity that allows men in power to verbally, physically, and emotionally abuse women must end. Nigerian women are not second-class citizens, and they will no longer tolerate the likes of Nwebonyi trampling on their dignity.

The Nigerian Senate is already a deeply compromised institution, riddled with corruption, incompetence, and a shocking lack of accountability. But to allow men like Nwebonyi to continue debasing it with their gutter politics and reckless mouth is an insult to every citizen of this country. The time for action is now.

The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) stands resolute: we will not be silent in the face of this tyranny. We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to rise against this disgrace. Senator Nwebonyi must be held accountable, and his reign of impunity must come to an end.

E-SIGNED,

COMRADE-GENERAL

Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN)
