Senator Abba Moro Calls for Urgent Action Against Herdsmen Violence in Benue South

Senator Comrade Abba Moro, the representative for Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, has called attention to the alarming frequency of attacks on communities in his district by suspected Fulani herdsmen. In a poignant motion presented during Thursday’s Senate session, Moro highlighted the dire situation following recent violent incidents in Akpete and Ojantelle communities in Apa Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of lives and extensive property damage.

During his address to the Senate, Moro expressed deep concern over the ongoing attacks, which he described as a significant threat to the safety and livelihood of his constituents. The senator revealed that at least thirteen individuals were killed in attacks that took place on May 1 and May 7, 2025, while they were engaged in their daily activities. The motion he presented underscored that this violence is part of a broader pattern of systematic attacks and kidnappings that have plagued the region.

Senator Moro lamented the lack of accountability, emphasizing that no arrests had been made in connection with these heinous acts. He urged the Senate to take immediate action to protect the affected communities and restore peace. The motion, titled “Herdsmen Attacks on Akpete/Ojantele Communities of Apa Local Government Area of Benue South Senatorial District: Urgent Need for Senate’s Intervention,” called for several critical measures, including:

1. An urgent investigation by the Nigeria Police and relevant security agencies to apprehend the attackers.

2. Comprehensive surveillance in the troubled areas by the federal government to prevent future incidents.

3. A review of operational strategies by law enforcement to enhance their proactive capabilities in addressing such emergencies.

4. Immediate mobilization of relief materials by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for those displaced by the violence.

5. A minute of silence to honor the victims of the recent attacks.

All proposed actions were unanimously approved by the Senate, and a moment of silence was observed in memory of those lost.

In the wake of these events, local activist Comrade Paul Edoh Jr. expressed gratitude for the Senator’s response to calls for action, noting the persistent advocacy for justice in Akpete. Edoh, who has been vocal about the need for representation before the House of Representatives, highlighted the indifference of some lawmakers to the plight of their constituents, particularly criticizing the lack of responsiveness from Hon. Ojema regarding the troubling situation.

As the Benue South community grapples with the aftermath of these tragic events, Senator Moro’s call for immediate intervention reflects the urgency of addressing the spiral of violence and instability that has impacted the region. The senator’s dedication to the welfare of his people reinforces the vital need for strong political leadership and decisive action in the face of escalating insecurity.
