**Constituency Funds Are Not Private Property: NBA Citizens’ Engagement Committee Urges Nigerians to Demand Accountability from Lawmakers**
By. Paul G Edoh Jr.
The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Citizens’ Engagement Committee has called on Nigerians to hold their elected representatives accountable for the use of constituency funds allocated for developmental projects. Chairman of the committee, Kunle Edun, SAN, made this call in a public statement, urging citizens to actively engage their legislators in both chambers of the National Assembly on how funds meant for constituency development are being spent.
According to Edun, the call has become imperative in light of widespread concerns that constituency funds are being diverted for personal or political purposes, with little to no evidence of actual project implementation in many communities. He emphasized that these funds are public resources, intended for the benefit of citizens, and not for the private or political use of elected officials.
In this regard, it is not out of place to constantly call on the member representing the good people of Apa-Agatu Federal Constituency in the 10th Assembly, Chief. Hon. Past. Ojotu Ojema, to publish and detail how much has been allocated to each project and provide proof of how he has utilized the funds approved for him, including the Zonal Intervention Funds Since taking office in 2023, in an organized town hall meeting. Ojema has a responsibility to provide transparency regarding the projects executed using those funds.
As a representative of the people, Ojema must understand that his accountability to his constituents is paramount. The lack of clear communication and reporting on the use of these funds could lead to distrust and disillusionment among the voters. Therefore, it is critical for people of Apa-Agatu to actively demand that Ojema demonstrates accountability and transparency in his management of constituency funds in all fora.
Just the same way, Member representing Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency in Ondo state Hon. Akingbaso has done over time on constituency funds allocated to him in public gathering.
According to Edun, “it’s time the citizens, particularly traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community leaders begin to take concrete action to stop the looting of constituency funds.” He urged these influential figures to demand that senators and representatives publish proof of how they have utilized these funds since 2023.
He further stressed that “many politicians now treat constituency funds as personal entitlements, using them for patronage.” This is particularly evident in Apa-Agatu, where lawmakers and their aides have led people to believe that constituency projects are carried out with the lawmakers’ personal resources. We must change that narrative, and while Ojema may be a decent person, the truth must always be told,
This call to action should resonate not only in the immediate context but should also set a precedent for future elections. Citizens must continue to hold their elected officials accountable, ensuring that by the time the 2027 general elections approach, there is a clear track record of responsible governance and effective use of public funds. This is not merely a request but a necessary demand for a better future.
In light of these concerns, let us collectively urge Ojema to rise to this command and ensure that every kobo allocated for the development of Apa-Agatu translates into tangible progress for the community. The onus is on the constituents to engage and demand the accountability that democracy promises.
