Agatu Local Government Area, Once a Hub For Great Farming and Fishing; Now a Den of Fulani Herders’ Incessant Attacks and Kíllings.
By Comr. Ochoche Echono
“For generations, the people of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State have depended on farming and fishing not just as livelihoods, but as the heartbeat of their cultural and economic identity. In recent years, however, violent attacks attributed to armed Fulani herders have brought waves of insecurity, forcing families off their ancestral lands, crippling agricultural activity, and plunging the region into economic and social distress. What was once a thriving, self-reliant community now faces hunger, displacement, and fear on a daily basis.
Children are dropping out of school as their parents can no longer afford basic necessities. Farmlands lie abandoned, rivers once filled with life are now surrounded by silence and tension, and entire villages have been reduced to memories. Women and the elderly bear the brunt of the crisis, struggling to feed their families while mourning the loss of their homes and loved ones.
Despite these hardships, the resilience of the Agatu people remains unbroken. But resilience alone is not enough. The world must pay attention.
We call on the government at all levels, humanitarian organizations, and civil society to take immediate action—to restore security, provide relief, and support sustainable recovery. Agatu deserves not just to survive, but to thrive in peace and dignity once again.”
