Amnesty International Asks Nigerian Government To Probe Brutal Killing Of 12 Travellers In Plateau

It was reported that the travellers, including men, women, and children, had departed from Basawa in the Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State in an 18-seater bus when they came under attack around 8pm.

The Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to probe the killing of 12 travellers by a mob in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred around Kyarang junction in Manjul community of Mangu Local Government Area, involved 31 passengers, who were heading to Qua’an Pan LGA for a wedding ceremony.

It was reported that the travellers, including men, women, and children, had departed from Basawa in the Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State in an 18-seater bus when they came under attack around 8pm.

According to survivors, the bus had missed its route and stopped to ask for directions when they were suddenly surrounded and attacked by a violent mob.

Reacting on Saturday, the human rights group stressed the urgent need for authorities to ensure that those behind the attack are promptly brought to justice.

Amnesty International also recalled a similarly tragic incident in August 2021 along Rukuba Road in Jos North, where 22 travellers returning from an Islamic New Year celebration in Bauchi were brutally killed.

In a statement issued via its verified X platform on Saturday, Amnesty International underscored its position, “The horrific killing of 12 travellers in Plateau State demands an immediate, impartial, and effective investigation. Nigerian authorities must ensure justice for victims and prevent such heinous acts from recurring. Impunity only fuels further violence. #PlateauKillings #JusticeForTravelers.”

The organisation urged the Nigerian authorities to move beyond mere condemnation and implement concrete measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Targeting commuters travelling through communities is deemed a dangerous crime that cannot be justified and demonstrates a blatant disregard for the right to life and due process of law.

Amnesty International stressed that adequate medical care must also be provided to those who were injured in the attack.
