Yelewata Massacre: DSS Drags Suspects to Court Over Terror Charges
The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed multiple charges at the Federal High Court, Abuja, against suspects linked to the deadly attacks on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident, which occurred between June 13th and 14th, left several villagers dead while many others sustained serious injuries.
According to court filings obtained by NTA News, six separate charges were instituted, covering nine suspects apprehended through intelligence operations. However, only two suspects, Haruna Adamu and Muhammad Abdullahi, both from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, were formally charged on four counts directly tied to the Yelewata massacre.
The DSS accused the duo of “concealing vital information about planned acts of terrorism and mass killings in Abinsi and Yelewata villages,” contrary to the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2022.
The Federal Government, through the Director of Public Prosecution, Muhammad Abubakar, also alleged that Adamu and Abdullahi conspired with other accomplices still at large — including Musa Beniyon, Bako Malowa, Ibrahim Tunga, Asara Ahnadu, Legu Musa, Adamu Yale, Boddi Ayuba, and Pyeure Damina — in preparation for acts of terrorism.
Meanwhile, two other individuals from Guma LGA, Terkende Ashuwa and Amos Alede, were slammed with a three-count charge for allegedly carrying out reprisal attacks against the terror suspects involved in Abinsi and Yelewata.
In a separate charge, a 32-year-old woman, Halima Haliru Umar, from Faskari LGA, Katsina State, is facing a four-count charge for allegedly withholding information about a suspected arms dealer and kidnap kingpin identified as Alhaji Sani.
Also, Silas Iduh Oloche of Agatu LGA, Benue State, is standing trial on a six-count charge for unlawful possession of 18 firearms, including grenades, without a license — an offense punishable under the Firearms Act, Section 27.
Other suspects found in possession of illegal weapons have equally been charged by the Federal Government. However, no official trial date has been fixed for the cases.
This move marks a major step in the government’s effort to bring perpetrators of violent attacks in Benue and surrounding states to justice.
