Otukpo, Benue State.
In a significant development within the traditional governance structure of Benue State, the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) has officially nullified the chieftaincy titles that were purportedly conferred by the Igede Traditional Council on September 6, 2025. This decision, rooted in the Benue State Chieftaincy Law of 2016 (as amended), was announced in a statement released by the Secretary of the Idoma Area Traditional Council, Mr. Adegbe Uloko.
The council’s pronouncement comes in the wake of a prior declaration made on September 2, 2025, by His Royal Majesty, Agaba Idu Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John, the Och’Idoma V and President of the Idoma Area Traditional Council. According to the council, the Igede Traditional Council’s actions are a direct violation of this earlier declaration, rendering the titles conferred as null, void, and lacking in any legal, customary, or traditional effect.
“The Idoma Area Traditional Council remains the legally constituted and government-recognized traditional authority over the Idoma nation,” stated the announcement. The council emphasized that any actions contravening its directives amount to a breach of existing laws, underscoring the importance of adherence to due process in traditional governance.
The public, as well as government institutions and traditional stakeholders, are urged to disregard the Igede Council’s chieftaincy conferments, as they have been deemed illegitimate by the recognized traditional authority in the region.
This decision aims to uphold the integrity of traditional institutions in Benue State and maintain peace, unity, and order within the Idoma community. The Idoma Area Traditional Council reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the traditions and customs of the Idoma people while working towards promoting harmony and respect among all traditional institutions.
As the story unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Igede Traditional Council will respond to this development and how it will impact traditional governance in the region moving forward.
