Agatu Council Chairman Disburses Cash, Rice Across Wards for Christmas Celebration
Thursday December 25, 2025
The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb) James Melvin Ejeh, has disbursed cash and bags of rice to residents across the ten wards of the council for the Christmas celebration, aimed at supporting vulnerable groups.
The distribution exercise, which took place in Obagaji, the headquarters of the local government, on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, was carried out to ease economic hardship and enable residents, particularly widows, orphans, and other vulnerable persons, to celebrate the festive season with dignity.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Ejeh said the initiative was intended to spread joy, unity, and goodwill among residents for the Christmas celebration. He described the gesture as part of the council’s annual commitment to social welfare and inclusive governance.
According to the chairman, the intervention reflects the local government’s resolve to stand with Christian faithful and other residents, irrespective of their religious or ethnic background, while promoting peaceful coexistence across communities.
“This support is part of our consistent commitment to stand with our Christian brethren, especially widows and the most vulnerable, so they can celebrate Christmas in peace and happiness,” he said.
In addition to the rice distribution, cash support was also approved for councillors, government appointees, and critical stakeholders to enable them to host constituents and support community-based activities for the Christmas celebration.
Hon. Ejeh commended Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for what he described as people-centred and inclusive policies, noting that the state government’s leadership continues to inspire grassroots initiatives that prioritise citizens’ welfare.
Reacting to the gesture, the Leader of the Agatu Legislative Council, Hon. Tony Simon, expressed appreciation on behalf of the beneficiaries, saying the assistance would go a long way in helping residents celebrate Christmas despite prevailing economic challenges.
The intervention highlights the local government’s ongoing focus on social welfare and support for disadvantaged citizens, especially during the Christmas season.
