*AGATU YOUTH COUNCIL PETITIONS POLICE CHIEF OVER HERDSMEN ATTACKS, ARBITRARY ARRESTS *
The Agatu National Youth Council (ANYC) has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Benue State, over the dire security situation in Agatu Local Government Area, pleading for intervention to stop arbitrary arrests and protect lives and properties.
In the petition, ANYC alleged that Fulani herdsmen have been attacking Agatu communities since 2013, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of properties, and devastation of farmlands. The council suspects collusion between the herdsmen and some individuals in positions of authority.
ANYC demanded the immediate release of youths arrested in Obagaji on January 25, 2026, for questioning the herdsmen’s brutality. They also sought accountability from security commandants in Agatu and approval for an internal security network to protect the people.
The petition was copied to top officials, including the Paramount Ruler of Idoma Kingdom, Senator Abbah Moro, and other lawmakers.
