ABANDONED IBI RIVER BRIDGE PROJECT SPARKS OUTRAGE IN TARABA
The Ibi River Bridge project in Taraba State, Nigeria, has been abandoned due to a lack of funding, sparking widespread outrage among Nigerians. The 2.3-kilometer bridge, awarded to Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) in 2020 at a cost of ₦57 billion, was expected to boost economic and educational development in the region by facilitating transportation and trade.
Background of the Project:
The project, which includes an 8-kilometer access road, was promised by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 to improve the connectivity of Taraba State. Despite receiving mobilization funds from the SUKUK loan, the contractor abandoned the site due to financial constraints and uncertainties surrounding future funding.
Current Status and Challenges:
The construction site has been vandalized, with metal scavengers stripping valuable iron materials, further exacerbating the project’s challenges. Community sources report that the vandals are targeting bridge pillars, using heavy equipment to demolish them and extract iron rods. Local stakeholders and security agents are suspected of tacitly supporting these actions.
Demands for Completion:
Nigerians are demanding answers on why the ₦57 billion project has stalled despite over ₦4 billion being paid to the contractor. The people of Taraba State are calling for the Federal Government to prioritize the completion of this vital infrastructure project, which would³:
– Improve Transportation: Facilitate movement of goods and services, enhancing commercial activities within North Central and North Eastern states.
– Boost Economy: Unlock the socio-economic potential of the region, providing access to vital services, markets, and opportunities.
– Ensure Safety: Prevent imminent danger to local boat operators and residents, particularly during periods of river overflow.
