PRESS RELEASE: AIYA PROVIDES UPDATE ON AGATU MOU FOLLOWING STAKEHOLDERS’ MEETING IN ABUJA
The Agatu Indigenous Youth Association – AIYA wishes to update the public on developments concerning the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Agatu traditional rulers.
In response to consistent calls by Agatu youths for the contents of the MOU to be made public, a meeting of stakeholders was held in Abuja on *Wednesday, June 3, 2026*, during which the MOU was read to all attendees.
*Key disclosures from the meeting are as follows:*
1. *Purpose of the Land:* The land at Ogwumogbo, which has been the subject of public concern, was allocated solely for agricultural purposes, not for mining as previously speculated.
2. *Duration and Review:* The MOU is for a period of 10 years. Upon expiration, it may be reviewed. Any review will be subject to the goodwill of the farmer to whom the land is leased.
3. *Security Measures:* The area covered under the MOU will be fenced, and a security tower will be erected within the premises.
4. *Operational Autonomy:* To ensure the farmer operates without undue interference, the community is required to give a two-week notice should there be any need for internal review within the leased premises, as it constitutes the private business of the lessee.
Furthermore, members of the community, particularly from Agatu West where the land is located, have requested a copy of the MOU for future reference. This demand is yet to be addressed.
AIYA remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the protection of Agatu community interests. We will continue to engage all stakeholders to ensure the agreement serves the long-term good of our people.
