UNDERSTANDING BABY WEIGHT: WHAT EVERY MOTHER SHOULD KNOW

In Nigeria today, many mothers are worried when they hear that their baby is “too small” or “too big.” Some don’t even know what is normal or what to do. Let us break it down in a simple way so that every mother and father can understand what baby weight means — both before and after birth.

1. What Is Baby Weight?

Baby weight simply means how heavy your baby is when born. It is measured in kilograms (kg) or grams (g) at birth.

Normal weight: 2.5kg to 4.0kg (that’s 2,500 grams to 4,000 grams)

Low birth weight: Less than 2.5kg

High birth weight: More than 4kg

2. Why Is Baby Weight Important?

Baby weight tells us how well your baby grew inside the womb. It can also help doctors and midwives know if your baby may have any health issues.

A baby that is too small may have problems feeding, breathing, or keeping warm.

A baby that is too big may make delivery difficult or lead to operation (C-section).

3. What Makes a Baby Big or Small?

Reasons a baby may be small:

The mother didn’t eat well during pregnancy.

Too much stress or heavy work during pregnancy.

High blood pressure or sickness like malaria.

Smoking, alcohol, or use of harmful herbs or drugs.

If the mother had twins or premature delivery (early birth).

Reasons a baby may be big:

The mother ate too much sugary or starchy food (like garri, rice, soft drinks).

The mother had diabetes during pregnancy.

There is a family history of big babies.

Late delivery (baby stays too long in the womb).

4. How Can a Mother Help Her Baby Gain Healthy Weight?

Before birth (pregnancy):

Eat balanced food: Beans, vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, pap, egg, moi moi, and small swallow with soup.

Avoid too much sugar and oil.

Rest well, reduce stress.

Go for antenatal care regularly.

Avoid using drugs without doctor’s advice.

After birth:

Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months — no water or pap!

Feed the baby often, especially at night.

After 6 months, add soft foods like mashed yam, pap with milk, crayfish, mashed beans, ripe banana, sweet potato, etc.

Keep the baby clean and healthy — avoid infections.

5. Is Low Baby Weight a Death Sentence?

No. Many small babies grow to become healthy and strong — if cared for properly. What matters is early care, breastfeeding, and good hygiene.

6. What Should You Do If Your Baby Is Too Small or Big?

Don’t panic.

Let a nurse or doctor check the baby.

Follow instructions: feeding, drugs, or even keeping the baby in hospital (for small babies).

7. Myths About Baby Weight in Nigeria

“The fatter the baby, the healthier” — Not always true. Overweight babies can have problems too.

“Eating for two during pregnancy” — You don’t need to overeat. Just eat quality food, not large quantity.

“Pap alone is enough for baby after birth” — False. Only breastmilk is enough for first 6 months.

A baby’s weight is not a matter of shame or pride. What matters most is health — whether big or small. Proper care, food, rest, and medical attention are the keys to having a healthy baby.

This is for fathers, mothers, singles and grandparents to take note.
