Ikobi: Mobile Policemen Redeploy Themselves Amidst Rising Threats, in Benue state

Ochochi magazine:

In a troubling turn of events, four out of ten Mobile Policemen recently deployed to Ikobi, a community in Apa Local Government Area in Benue state, have reportedly redeployed themselves without authorization, raising serious concerns about security coordination in a community grappling with threats from suspected Fulani herdsmen. This revelation follows commendable efforts by Governor Hycienth Alia and his administration to enhance safety measures in the area.

The alarming self reassignment of the four officers was brought to light by frontline social rights activist in the local government. Comrade Paul G. Edoh Jr, who expressed both concern and frustration over the lack of communication within the security framework. Edoh highlighted the swift response of Hon. Sulieman Elaigwu Sulieman, the Personal Special Assistant to the Governor, who promptly facilitated the deployment of Mobile Policemen to Ikobi based on intelligence reports about an imminent attack on the community.

While the initial deployment represented a proactive approach to security, the subsequent withdrawal of four officers immediately after their assignment raises pressing questions about the stability and effectiveness of security operations in the community struggling with security challenges. Notably, both the Benue state commissioner of Police and the local government Chairman, Honourable Adams Ocheja, were reportedly unaware of the redeployment, which has left community members wary of their safety.

Efforts to get the Local Government chairman and his chief. Press secretary prove abortive at the time of filling this report.

“Security matters in volatile areas like ours are critical. It is imperative that no stone is left unturned to ensure the safety of our various community members,” Edoh stated in a press release.

In an effort to bolster security further, Governor Alia recently donated three patrol vehicles and fifteen motorcycles to Agatu Local Government Area, a move welcomed by local authorities as a significant step towards improving safety measures. Local government Chairman Hon. Amb. Melvin Ejeh received the vehicles with optimism, yet questions linger about the adequacy of support from the Constituency’s representative in the 10th National Assembly, Hon. Chief. Pastor. Ojotu Ojema.

Critics argue that the Member representing the Apa-Agatu Federal Constituency should take more decisive action in the fight against terrorism by leveraging the resources allocated by the governor. Proposals include acquiring used motorcycles for surveillance and security patrols, which could significantly enhance community safety was offered by the Constituency Activist.

“As a sitting lawmaker, it is crucial for him to take proactive steps without needing reminders about the importance of contributing meaningfully to the safety and security of his constituents,” Edoh urged, emphasizing the collective responsibility of all leaders in protecting the community.

As security threats continue to escalate, community stakeholders are calling for enhanced collaboration and strategic actions to ensure the safety of residents in Ikobi and surrounding areas. With tensions high, the time for unity and decisive response from all local leaders is now more critical than ever.
