Breaking News: Kenya Plans Return of $900m Abacha Funds to Nigeria, Cites Governance Concerns

 

Kenya is set to repatriate approximately $900 million allegedly linked to the Abacha loot, nearly four decades after the funds were moved abroad. Kenyan officials stated that the money is intended for the Nigerian people, but they won’t release it under the current administration, citing concerns about mismanagement. ¹

 

The Abacha loot refers to funds embezzled by former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and his associates. Since 1998, over $5.56 billion has been recovered from various jurisdictions, including the US, UK, France, and Switzerland. ²

 

This isn’t the first time Kenya has been involved in recovering Abacha’s stolen assets. However, the current administration’s concerns about the Nigerian government’s capacity to manage the funds responsibly highlight ongoing issues with transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s public administration. ³
