“Demanding Compassion: Accountability and Leadership in the Wake of Tragedy in Akpete”

The recent tragic events in Akpete community within the Apa-Agatu federal constituency highlight a deeply concerning lack of empathy and responsibility from some leaders, particularly from Honourable Ojotu Ojema and his team. The brutal attack on innocent farmers, resulting in loss of life and fear for safety, resonates as a monumental failure in leadership during a time when the community desperately needs solidarity and support.

It is disheartening to witness those in positions of power choosing to prioritize self promotion and personal agendas on our local government space over the pain and suffering of their constituents. While the community grieves and mourns the victims of this senseless violence, it is inconceivable that members of Ojema’s camp would proceed with normalcy as if nothing has happened. True leaders exhibit compassion and solidarity in the face of tragedy, and the contrast between the community’s mourning and the Honourable’s disregard is stark and alarming.

The moral obligation to stand by the affected families, to express condolences, and to advocate for measures to prevent such violence is paramount. Both the Bible and the Quran emphasize the significance of standing with those who mourn. For instance, Romans 12:15 states, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Similarly, in the Quran, Surah Al-Insan (76:8) reminds us, “And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.” These teachings resonate deeply, urging us to show compassion and humanity in our actions.

The absence of sympathy from Ojema’s camp is not just a poor reflection of their character; it threatens the very fabric of community trust and unity. As the community prepares for the upcoming elections, it becomes increasingly vital for constituents to assert their expectations for empathy and proactive leadership. The voters must recognize who truly stands with them in grief and is prepared to advocate for their safety and well-being.

In the face of such a grave situation, it is imperative for the community to hold their leaders accountable and to demand a different standard of care and concern. The forthcoming elections present an opportunity to stand with those who demonstrate genuine compassion and to reject those who fail to acknowledge the suffering of their constituents. The disregard for the tragic events that unfolded cannot be overlooked; it’s time for a change that reflects not just ambition, but also humanity.

Signed:

Comrade Paul G Edoh Jr

Concerned constituent member from Apa.
